GNA launched the new State of Sustainable Fleets 2023 Market Brief at the most recent Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo that took place May 1-4 in Anaheim, California. The brief reports on the resounding trend for commercial fleets rapid adoption of clean fuel and advanced vehicle technologies. The most widely adopted clean energy alternative according to the report is Battery-Electric Vehicles (BEV).
According to respondents of the State of Sustainable Fleets Survey, 65% have used a BEV in the past two years and 92% intend to grow their use in the next five years. Although this wide interest is encouraging, BEVs currently make up only 4% of a fleet’s vehicle population according to the survey results. Conversations and educational sessions at the ACT Expo explored some reasons this may be the case including technology supply issues, long waiting lists due to high demand for vehicles, lack of infrastructure, and concern about the ability of America’s power grids to support widespread adoption.
No one has all the answers today, but BEV does seem to be the most widely understood and adopted form of clean transportation. Considering that GNA is predicting that most heavy-duty OEMs will be planning to sunset diesel development, and that the state-level Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandates will continue to expand, it’s understandable that many fleets are turning to BEV adoption.
